Power and Heritage

The latest Ariel Atom, dubbed the 4RR, marks the 25th anniversary of the original turn‑of‑the‑millennium model. It carries a hand‑built, turbocharged four‑cylinder derived from the previous‑generation Civic Type R, now completely reworked, blueprinted and balanced over roughly 100 hours.

525 horsepower at 8,200 rpm and 406 lb‑ft of torque at 5,200 rpm are the headline figures, with two additional maps offering 400 hp and 500 hp for more gradual acceleration.

Engineering and Chassis

Behind the raw power sits a steel‑tube frame weighing about 1,500 lb, paired with a Quaife six‑speed sequential gearbox that can be eased with a light clutch touch. The car’s suspension features manually adjustable Öhlins dampers that have been softened, while the inboard, pushrod‑operated layout benefits from a new aerodynamic package.

Braking is handled by 12.2‑inch AP Racing discs with four‑piston calipers on all corners, and the wheels are shod with Yokohama A052 track‑oriented rubber.

Performance on the Road

Despite its extreme output, the 4RR feels remarkably calm. Mid‑corner bumps and cambers are absorbed without upset, and the turbo four delivers a progressive boost that feels tractable at low revs and erupts toward the 8,200‑rpm limiter on the highest map.

Traction control and ABS are driver‑adjustable, including a fully off setting, and the 255‑section rear tires provide astonishing grip in hot, dry conditions.

U.S. Availability

A new exclusive agreement between Ariel and long‑standing U.S. distributor Forman Motorworks now allows American customers to order any Ariel model directly from the U.K. factory. Deliveries to the United States are planned to begin next summer.

The 4RR carries a price tag of £208,000 in the U.K.; U.S. pricing has not been confirmed, though estimates place it around $325,000, more than double the cost of a fully optioned 400‑hp 4R.

Driving Impressions

Settling into the molded composite seat and pressing the start button unleashes a turbo four that fizzles through the chassis. Even on the winding roads near Ariel’s Somerset base, the car remains composed, with the suspension and aerodynamic work delivering a mature feel.

Full‑throttle, clutchless upshifts produce a delirious experience that, while usable on public roads, shines brightest on an open racetrack.

In sum, the Ariel Atom 4RR blends record‑setting power with refined engineering, offering a uniquely balanced track‑ready machine that will soon be reachable for U.S. enthusiasts.
