Sony’s Q2 Profit Surge Fueled by PlayStation and Spider‑Man Blockbuster

Sony posted a 44% jump in quarterly net profit, driven by PlayStation earnings and the record‑breaking Spider‑Man: Brand New Day.
Wow! Sony’s latest earnings report shows a spectacular profit surge.
Net profit for the three months ended September hit 449.60 billion yen (about $2.84 billion), marking a 44 percent rise from the 311.4 billion yen ($1.96 billion) recorded in the same period last year.
The jump is largely credited to two powerhouses: the PlayStation division and the blockbuster film Spider‑Man: Brand New Day.
Released in July, Spider‑Man: Brand New Day raked in $2.52 billion at the global box office, ranking as the third‑highest‑grossing movie in history. That windfall helped Sony Pictures Entertainment post earnings of $581 million for the quarter, a staggering 527 percent increase from the $93 million reported in the comparable 2025 period.
Meanwhile, PlayStation hardware sales slipped, with 2.6 million PS5 units sold in Q2, down from 4 million in Q2 2025. Despite the dip, game sales—both digital downloads and physical discs—continued to climb.
Notably, the Sony‑exclusive title Marvel’s Wolverine moved 2.4 million units against a reported $300 million budget, underscoring strong software performance.
Even a week‑long player blackout in August, staged to protest Sony’s plan to eliminate discs, did not stall overall game revenue growth.
Looking ahead, Sony’s CFO Lin Tao said developers are making “solid progress” on the next‑generation console, and the project remains “progressing as scheduled.”
All told, the combined strength of a record‑breaking film and resilient gaming sales propelled Sony’s profit surge, setting a robust foundation for future growth.
