Family Announcement and Career Overview

John Leeson, born John Ducker in 1943, died at 83 after a summer of illness, his son Guy Ducker confirmed on Facebook, writing that “the end was peaceful.” Ducker also thanked the Whovian community for the love shown to his father over the decades.

Leeson trained at RADA and built a varied career on stage and screen. His television credits included Dad’s Army, Sorry!, Crown Court, Longitude, The Bill, Vanity Fair, Doctors and Blake’s 7. He also worked as a continuity announcer on Channel 4 and played Bungle on the children’s series Rainbow.

K9: The Role That Defined a Generation

Leeson became the voice of K9, the robot dog created by Bob Baker and Dave Martin, when the character debuted in the 1977 Doctor Who story “The Invisible Enemy” starring Tom Baker. Although originally intended for a single episode, the production team kept K9 for younger viewers, and he remained until 1981, with David Brierly also providing the voice for a period. Leeson’s delivery gave K9 the catchphrase “Affirmative, Master.”

He returned to the role for the 20th‑anniversary special, the spin‑off K‑9 and Company featuring Elisabeth Sladen as Sarah Jane Smith, and later in the 2006 Doctor Who episode “School Reunion” with David Tennant. The partnership continued in the CBBC series Sarah Jane Adventures until Sladen’s death in 2011.

Tributes from Colleagues

Former showrunner Russell T Davies posted on Instagram, saying there was “no question that we’d ask John to provide the voice” when the robot returned, describing K9 as “a posh dog, uppity, haughty, wry, but somehow innocent too, and so funny.” He called Leeson “a true gent, and a great loss.”

Producer Keith Barnfather, who first worked with Leeson in the 1980s, called him “kind, considerate, professional, charming, talented, unassuming.” Doctor Who actress Lisa Bowerman called him “an utterly lovely man, excellent company and … a truly iconic voice.”

Personal Reflections and Later Work

Before acting, Leeson worked as a hospital porter and later described his career as split between stage work and an accidental television path. He recalled the discomfort of wearing the Bungle costume on Rainbow, saying he was “poured out of this costume every evening into a taxi.” He also joked about an “army haircut” on Dad’s Army that was hidden by a balaclava.

Even in his later years, Leeson continued to voice K9 for Big Finish audio dramas, noting that producers had once told him there would be “no circumstances would there be anything after the first episode has been shot and is in the can,” yet he remained attached to Doctor Who into 2025.
