AI‑assisted micro‑drama edits of “Neighbours” spark consent concerns among former cast and crew

Former “Neighbours” actors and crew warn that AI‑driven re‑editing of old footage into short vertical videos may use their images and voices without permission.

AI‑driven re‑editing project announced

Fremantle, the producer of the now‑defunct Australian soap opera Neighbours, has teamed up with US‑based RoseBerry Media to create a series of short vertical videos for mobile viewers. The companies say the project will use artificial intelligence to “scan decades of episodes” and identify strong material for new micro‑drama clips.

Focus on Margot Robbie’s early work

The first set of clips will centre on footage of Margot Robbie, who played Donna Freedman from 2008 to 2011. Both firms claim the approach will introduce the show, which aired its final episode last year, to new audiences.

Actors raise consent concerns

Several former cast members say they have not been approached for permission to reuse their image, voice or performances.

Matt Werkmeister, who joined the set in 2005 at age 13 and played Zeke Kinski, says he was not contacted by the project’s producers. “If they’re creating a new micro‑drama out of something that already exists, I feel there needs to be consent for using our image and voice as well as the writers,” he said.

Werkmeister added that while Robbie is “obviously a big draw card” and “it’s nice to watch old clips,” his contract from two decades ago was signed before streaming existed, leaving his rights unclear.

Sam Clark, who portrayed Ringo Brown from 2006 to 2010, learned of the micro‑drama only after a friend sent him an article. He is based in Los Angeles and works as a producer and voice actor.

Company statements on the editing process

Fremantle’s spokesperson explained that the AI will map character arcs, storylines and standout moments, helping editors quickly locate the strongest material. The micro‑drama episodes will use “original, previously broadcast footage, dialogue and performances.”

The spokesperson emphasized that the technology “does not generate new scenes or performances, alter actors’ faces or likenesses, or use synthetic voices.” A human editor will review and approve every stage of the editing process.

Robbie’s response pending

Margot Robbie has not yet responded publicly. The BBC has contacted her agency for comment.

The plan to repurpose “Neighbours” content with AI therefore proceeds amid uncertainty about consent from actors who appeared in the original series.
