Sinkhole Strikes Nicolas Cage’s Malibu Home

Actor Nicolas Cage, 62, revealed on Oct. 31 at L.A. Comic‑Con that he is “a little bit homeless” after a sinkhole damaged his Malibu, CA, property.

He explained that “something happened to my house in Malibu, so I’m just sort of living in hotels” and noted he had hoped to take his four‑year‑old daughter, August, trick‑or‑treating in Santa Monica that night.

The sinkhole first appeared on Sept. 6 as a 30‑square‑foot opening in the driveway and later collapsed into a 900‑square‑foot hole, cracking the sidewalk and creating a gaping void.

Cause and Immediate Response

Public information officer Jonathan Torres of the L.A. County Fire Department said coastal erosion likely caused the collapse, and witnesses reported waves crashing through the opening.

Cage was not at the home when the sinkhole formed.

Authorities declared a state of emergency, red‑tagging seven nearby homes initially and later an additional 24 homes in the Sea Level Drive gated community, citing “current road erosion” that blocks normal ingress, egress and emergency evacuation routes.

Home Details and Market History

The ocean‑facing residence, purchased by Cage two years ago for $10.5 million, spans 4,000 sq ft and includes a private beach, roof deck, secluded courtyard, two‑car garage with an elevator, vaulted‑ceiling living room, chef’s kitchen, and four en‑suite bedrooms.

Listed in March 2024 for $11.25 million, the property was also offered for rent at $25,000 per month.

Prior to this purchase, the home had been on the market intermittently since summer 2022, with an earlier asking price of $17.9 million.

Community Impact and Repair Timeline

The homeowners association began repairs immediately, estimating the work could take up to five weeks.

Sea Level Drive is home to other celebrities, including Pierce Brosnan, Dustin Hoffman and Mindy Kaling.

What’s Next for Cage?

With his Malibu home currently uninhabitable, Cage is staying in hotels while the sinkhole is addressed.

He continues to maintain other residences, including a full‑time home in Nevada and a recently acquired Manhattan condo.

Fans can only hope the repairs are swift so the actor can return to his beachfront retreat.
