GOG’s Marcin Paczynski Details Why Dune 2 Is Stuck in Licensing Limbo
The classic 1992 RTS remains unavailable on GOG because its rights are tangled across multiple owners.

Westwood Studios’ Dune 2: The Building of a Dynasty is widely recognized as a foundational real‑time strategy title that shaped the genre and inspired later hits such as Warcraft.
Current Rights Landscape
Marcin Paczynski, senior business development and partnerships manager at GOG, explained that Electronic Arts currently controls the game’s code, assets, and all related materials.
However, EA does not own the Dune intellectual property itself. The IP originates not from Frank Herbert’s novels but from the 1984 movie, which was produced by Universal Pictures and Dino De Laurentiis.
Because De Laurentiis died fifteen years ago, his estate now holds a portion of the Dune 2 license.
Competing Claims from New Dune Projects
Legendary Pictures, which holds the rights to the newer Dune films, has a partnership with Funcom to develop Dune Awakening, a survival‑style game set in the Dune universe.
Paczynski noted that this agreement includes an “exclusivity” element, though it remains unclear how it might affect the re‑release of Westwood’s classic titles, including Dune 2000.
GOG’s Position and the Licensing Quagmire
Paczynski described Dune 2 as a personal “holy grail” for GOG’s preservation catalog, placing it at the top of his wish list.
He used the situation as an example of how “bad it can get with the licensing situation of a game,” highlighting the difficulty of navigating multiple owners and legacy agreements.
Why Fans May Be the Only Hope
Given the legal complexities, Paczynski suggested that fan‑made patches and mods often bypass the hurdles that corporate re‑releases must face.
He expressed hope that someday an official, modern PC version of Dune 2 will become available, allowing new players to experience the title that helped launch the modern RTS era.
