Contemporary Baseball Era Committee Announces Eight Non‑Player Hall of Fame Candidates for 2027

The Hall of Fame’s 2027 Contemporary Baseball Era Committee has named four managers and four executives as the eight finalists on its non‑player ballot.
Who Made the 2027 Non‑Player Ballot?
The National Baseball Hall of Fame in Cooperstown released the eight finalists for the 2027 Contemporary Baseball Era Committee ballot on Monday. The non‑player slate features four former managers and four former executives.
Managers: Dusty Baker, Bruce Bochy, Joe Maddon and Lou Piniella.
Executives: Sandy Alderson, Brian Sabean, Ted Turner and Bill White.
Selection Process and Eligibility
The candidates were chosen by the BBWAA‑appointed Historical Overview Committee from all eligible managers, umpires and executives whose most significant impact occurred after 1980. Eligibility requires managers and umpires to have at least ten major‑league seasons and to be retired for five years (or six months after turning 65). Executives must be retired for five years, though those 70 or older remain eligible regardless of current position.
All nominees must not appear on Baseball’s Ineligible List.
Managerial Legends
Dusty Baker guided five clubs to the playoffs, captured three pennants and won a World Series after a distinguished career as an MLB outfielder.
Bruce Bochy led three different clubs to the postseason and is one of only six managers to win at least four World Series titles—three with the San Francisco Giants and a fourth with the Texas Rangers in 2023.
Joe Maddon amassed more than 1,300 managerial wins across three franchises, earned a pennant with the Tampa Bay Rays, and delivered the Chicago Cubs their first World Series championship in over a century in 2016.
Lou Piniella logged an 18‑year playing career before collecting over 1,800 managerial victories, steering three clubs to the playoffs, winning the 1990 World Series with the Cincinnati Reds, and guiding the 2001 Seattle Mariners to a record‑tying 116 regular‑season wins.
Executive Achievers
Sandy Alderson built a powerhouse Oakland Athletics team that won a World Series as general manager, later delivering multiple playoff appearances and a pennant with the New York Mets.
Brian Sabean transitioned from a key New York Yankees front‑office role to become the Giants’ general manager, overseeing World Series titles in 2010, 2012 and 2014.
Ted Turner—the only posthumous candidate—owned the Atlanta Braves for two decades, pioneering televised baseball distribution and presiding over a dynasty that captured 14 straight division titles and the 1995 World Series.
Bill White was a five‑time All‑Star and Gold Glove first baseman who later served as National League president, becoming the first Black play‑by‑play broadcaster in MLB history and the first Black president of a major sports league.
Next Steps
The 16‑member Contemporary Baseball Era Committee will cast its votes on Sunday, Dec. 6, with results broadcast on MLB Network at 8 p.m. ET. As with the BBWAA ballot, a candidate must receive at least 75% of the votes to be elected.
The traditional BBWAA ballot, voted on by writers and media members, will be released on Nov. 16, with its results announced in January, completing the 2027 Hall of Fame class.
