DuVernay’s bleak forecast for the midterms

At the Airbnb.org Gala, Oscar‑nominated filmmaker Ava DuVernay warned that the midterm elections are not looking great for the U.S.—either way we’re in trouble.

She explained, “If the Democrats pull it out, I think you’re going to see an outsized reaction from the administration and I think if they don’t, you’re going to see an outsized reaction from the administration.”

“14th” and the push for civic awareness

DuVernay’s latest documentary, “14th,” has drawn critical acclaim and award‑season buzz. The film examines the 14th Amendment, which established birthright citizenship, due process and equal protection.

She added, “Folks need to really understand what it means to be a citizen, what it means to fight and to really know your rights.”

Election numbers as the deadline looms

With two days left until Election Day, more than 43 million Americans have already voted early in person or by mail, according to the Associated Press on Oct. 30.

The latest national congressional ballot average shows Democrats ahead of Republicans by 8.2 percentage points, with a 51.4 percent to 43.2 percent lead, per RealClearPolling.

Analysts widely predict Democrats will regain control of the House, while the Senate remains too close to call.

What’s next for DuVernay?

When asked about future projects, DuVernay said, “There’s so much going on. There’s no lack of material or things to look at or advocate for, so we all need to keep our eye on the ball and keep pushing forward.”

Her comments underscore a sense of urgency as the nation heads to the polls.
