Friends Speak Out

Sir Ian McKellen, a longtime friend and fellow Yorkshire native, called Stewart “the most respected and beloved actor of his generation,” noting the honesty that defined his Yorkshire roots. William Shatner praised the “intelligence, grace and a deep sense of humanity” Stewart brought to every role, especially as Captain Jean‑Luc Picard.

George Takei reflected on Stewart’s influence, saying the actor “inspired a whole next generation of star‑gazers who looked longingly ahead to a brighter future for all humanity.” Hugh Jackman described him as a “tremendous friend and man,” while Jonathan Frakes recalled that there was “no one on this planet that I have acted with or directed more often than my late great friend Patrick Stewart.”

Iconic Roles Remembered

Stewart’s portrayal of Captain Picard spanned more than 170 episodes of the original series, four feature films, and a return in the 2020 series Star Trek: Picard. He also embodied Professor Charles Xavier in the X‑Men franchise, earning admiration from co‑star Hugh Jackman.

Early Days on Stage

Before his sci‑fi fame, Stewart fell in love with drama at age 12 after a teacher introduced him to Shakespeare. Vintage photos show him as Launce in a 1970 production of The Two Gentlemen of Verona, sharing the stage with a rescue dog named Blackie. He later appeared as Sejanus in the 1976 BBC miniseries I, Claudius and worked alongside Janet Suzman in the 1974 film Antony and Cleopatra.
