Two people have been charged in relation to the death of 11‑year‑old Kai Pavlovic, a New Zealand citizen who went missing in Burnaby, Canada, more than a year ago.

RNZ previously reported that Kai’s New Zealand‑based family expressed “grave concerns for his safety.”

The Burnaby Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP) received a request for a well‑being check on Kai on 26 September 2025, noting that he was believed to be with a caretaker they were trying to identify.

In June 2025, the British Columbia Integrated Homicide Investigation Team (IHIT) assumed responsibility for the case, working with the Burnaby Serious Crimes Unit to continue the search and advance the investigation, which ultimately led to the discovery of Kai’s remains.

On 30 October 2025, IHIT Sergeant Freda Fong announced the arrests of Branko Bijelic, 51, of Burnaby, on charges of second‑degree murder and indignity to human remains, and Sarah Bijelic, 46, on a manslaughter charge.

“It is with heavy hearts that we share this update in the investigation into Kai’s death,” Fong said, adding that there are “no words to accurately express the sadness surrounding the circumstances.”

The RCMP issued a statement acknowledging the community’s concern, extending thoughts to Kai’s loved ones, and thanking the public for information that aided the investigation.

Fong described the charges as a “significant milestone following more than a year of investigation,” while noting that the work continues as the case moves through the prosecution process.

Because the matter is now before the courts, IHIT said no further details will be released.

Kai’s aunt, Helen Kok, told RNZ that Kai was “exceptionally kind, caring, intelligent, and funny,” describing him as outgoing, friendly, and brave enough to try anything.

Kai had relocated with his mother and stepfather to Vancouver in 2023.

The investigation remains active as legal proceedings commence.
