Google’s Free Browser‑Based Video Editor Joins Drive for Everyone

Google Vids, the web video editor that debuted for business users in 2024, is now free for individuals and lives inside Google Drive.
From Enterprise‑Only to Free for All
Google Vids first appeared in 2024 as a video‑editing add‑on for business and enterprise customers. In 2026 the tool was opened up to individual users, and Google continues to push regular updates.
How to Launch the Editor
Accessing Google Vids is straightforward. Within the web version of Google Drive, click New and then select Google Vids. Alternatively, visit the Google Vids app page and press the + button under “Start a new video.” Any videos you have already created appear on that page as well.
Starting a Project
When you begin, you can choose the Blank vid option or select from a variety of other entry points:
Generate AI videos with the Veo 3.1 model
Convert a slideshow into a video
Pick a pre‑made template
Upload an existing video as a base
Create an AI‑generated music track
Record directly from your camera
Produce a video featuring an AI avatar
Build a storyboard outline
Orientation can be set from the top of the screen.
Templates Ease the Learning Curve
If you are new, selecting a template from the opening splash screen is recommended. Hovering over a thumbnail shows an animated preview. After choosing a template, a dialog asks whether to use the entire template or only selected scenes, then the editor loads.
Interface Overview
The main editing window displays the currently selected segment. Below it lies the timeline with separate video and audio tracks. The right‑hand panel changes contextually, offering controls for the selected element.
Along the top are menus for transitions, element arrangement, adding new scenes, and overall project management.
Adding Media and Building Scenes
Use the buttons on the right to import webcam clips, AI videos, footage from Google Drive or Google Photos, voiceovers, text, images, music, and shapes. When you start from a template, many of these elements inherit the template’s styling.
To create a new scene, click the + button on the timeline, then drag media from the right‑hand panel into the scene.
Right‑Click Power Features
Right‑clicking the timeline reveals several shortcuts:
Mute the audio track of an imported video
Add a voiceover or replace the music
Split a scene to keep only a portion
Duplicate a scene to extend runtime
Editing Text Overlays
To place text on a video, select the scene, click the Text button on the right, then choose Add a title. Selecting the title in the scene lets you edit its content and style. Handles around the text box adjust position, size, and rotation. A floating toolbar below offers Animation, Resize, and Format options, the latter opening a panel for size, padding, rotation, and other settings.
Fine‑Tuning Elements
The right‑hand panel adapts to the selected element. For audio tracks you can apply fades; for video clips you can choose transitions; for composite scenes with multiple elements you can tweak appearance and behavior.
Google Vids is not a high‑resolution, multitrack professional suite, but for personal and hobbyist projects it provides a browser‑based workflow that can be mastered quickly.
