Police say five men were detained following the shooting, stabbing and torture of cattle farmer Donovan Marx in Ventersdorp.
Arrests made after “senseless and barbaric” farm attack
South African police announced that five people have been taken into custody in relation to the brutal assault on 50‑year‑old cattle farmer Donovan Marx. The arrests were praised by Marx’s wife and relatives, who said the “legal process must now take its course.”
The attack occurred last Wednesday on Marx’s farm in Ventersdorp, a small town in the North West province. Police described the incident as “senseless and barbaric.”
How the attack unfolded: A group of masked men armed with guns approached a farm worker who was mowing the lawn. The men demanded to know Marx’s whereabouts, then bound the worker’s hands and feet with cable ties.
Marx’s encounter: When Marx returned home, two of the suspects allegedly shot him in the upper body, dragged him inside the house, and tied his hands and feet with cable ties. He was then stabbed, and his ears were cut off, according to police.
The robbery: After the assault, the attackers ransacked the house, stole three firearms from a safe and fled in Marx’s van.
Escape and rescue: The farm worker eventually freed himself, called for help and police arrived, leading to the later arrests of the five suspects over the weekend.
The violent episode has sparked widespread outrage in South Africa, a country already accustomed to high levels of violence. Authorities have not released further details about the suspects or forthcoming charges.
