El Camarón Peludo Brings Mexican‑Spanish Seafood and Wine to West Village

Giovanni Cervantes and Tania Apolinar launch a walk‑in‑only wine bar that blends Mexican seafood with Spanish tapas influences.
From Taco Lines to a Walk‑In Wine Bar
After five years of running high‑volume taco operations at Taqueria Ramírez, Taqueria Carnitas Ramírez and Socceria, Giovanni Cervantes and Tania Apolinar decided to slow the pace with their first full‑service restaurant, El Camarón Peludo, in New York’s West Village.
The trend of hybrid, niche‑concept eateries is reshaping city dining scenes.
Finding the Right Concept
When the duo first examined the narrow, elongated space, they considered a taqueria but concluded the layout would not suit that format. Instead, they aimed for a “different” concept focused on seafood and wine, drawing on their Mexican roots and recent trips to Europe.
How Chef Carlos Barrera Joined the Team
Cervantes first met Barrera as a customer at Taqueria Ramírez and later connected through Instagram comments, even exchanging a flame emoji. Their proximity in Greenpoint led to more frequent meetings, and a pop‑up featuring Barrera’s “Trompo Negro” (a smoky al pastor‑style preparation) cemented their working relationship.
Balancing Mexican and Spanish Influences
The menu reflects a dialogue between the partners’ Mexican heritage and European inspirations. After a European trip, Cervantes leaned toward a more Spanish approach, but Apolinar and Barrera pushed back, resulting in a balanced blend.
Signature dishes include a simple gambas a la plancha and a seafood carpaccio that showcase freshness, while Mexican classics such as tuna‑topped tostadas and aguachile bring bold sauces and regional flavors.
What Sets El Camarón Peludo Apart
The restaurant operates on a walk‑in‑only model, encouraging guests to linger over carefully curated wines from around the world while enjoying the seafood‑centric menu.
El Camarón Peludo illustrates how a chance DM and a uniquely shaped venue can spark a fresh culinary direction in a crowded market.
