At least four people were killed when a lorry loaded with explosives blew up in Tolima province, western Colombia, on Sunday, according to a local official.

Governor Adriana Magali Matiz posted on X that a two‑month‑old baby girl was among the victims.

The blast happened near a military base in the town of Planadas, damaging a nearby hospital, a pharmacy and several other buildings.

Matiz described the incident as “a vile and criminal act that we reject with absolute forcefulness” and added that “attacking the civilian population and putting at risk the lives of our soldiers and the Tolima families is crossing a line that we will not tolerate.”

President Abelardo de la Espriella wrote on social media that “we will not retreat, not even a millimetre,” reaffirming his tough‑on‑crime platform.

Since taking office in August, de la Espriella has ended peace talks that began under his predecessor Gustavo Petro and has expanded operations against illegal armed groups, including bombing their camps.

Armed criminal groups have recently intensified attacks on security forces, sometimes using drones to transport explosives, though it remains unclear who was responsible for this particular bombing.

The incident adds to a pattern of escalating violence as the new administration pursues a crackdown on Colombia’s illegal groups.
